To understand and address the current challenges of architecture, it is essential to review its evolution and understand it from a contemporary perspective. Drawing on thinkers such as Walter Benjamin, Marina Waisman, and Jacques Derrida, in this new book Josep Maria Montaner focuses on the history of architecture, from the Enlightenment to the present day, to delve into its key phenomena and concepts, renaming them so that they become tools for the future. Divided into three major sections, the first part starts with the construction of the history of modern architecture, to highlight how many of today's social and cultural problems are related to the technological possibilities and ethical demands addressed in the 19th century, following the Industrial Revolution; in the second part, some topics of contemporary architectural theory are made visible and renamed, such as modular construction, the recurrence to popular culture, the recovery of history through the purification of memory and the emphasis on ethical values in the city and in architecture; and, finally, the third part focuses on current methodological issues on the state of theory and criticism, in a context of new pragmatism, insisting on challenges and emerging narratives, with special attention to feminisms and environmentalism.
