In 1966, two key books for contemporary architecture were published: Robert Venturi's *Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture* and Aldo Rossi's *The Architecture of the City*. In his most important book, Rossi brought about a Copernican shift in the conception of the city that has influenced architectural thought to this day. However, Rossi's concerns during that period were not limited to what he called urban science; he also attempted to construct a theory applied to architectural design.
