"The concept of Gaia, understood as a living planet, constitutes for me the essential basis of any environmentalism that wants to be coherent and practical; it refutes the entrenched view that the Earth is a property, a kind of gigantic estate that is there to be exploited for the benefit of humanity. The false belief that we are the owners of the Earth, or its administrators, is what allows us to hide behind supposedly ecological policies and programs while we continue to not transform our behavior."
In 1969, British researcher James Lovelock presented his Gaia Hypothesis, a theory by which Earth is defined as a large living organism capable of regulating its essential conditions—such as ocean salinity or temperature—to maintain equilibrium. Belonging to Gaia revisits the foundations of his theory to tell us the story of our extraordinary planet and warn us about the dangers of our abuses and impacts.
