In August 2011, at the Museo el Eco, with the participation of a group of visual artists, curators, and art critics from different parts of Mexico, a clinic organized by the Jumex Foundation was held, titled "The Form of an Archive," taught by visual artist Carla HerreraPrats.
This seminar began with the reading of several texts that, since the 1990s, have influenced archival practice linked to knowledge generation from the Visual Arts. The participants developed a project that led to the creation of new archives, as well as the use of existing archives.
On that occasion, it was the first time that I publicly showed part of the archive that, over a decade (2001-2010), I built around the artistic practices carried out by three artists from Monterrey: Juan Alberto Pérez Ponce, Juan Caballero, and Juan José González.
To participate in this clinic, I conducted an exhaustive review of my personal archive and the topics that had interested me as a contemporary art researcher in the city of Monterrey. In this review, I found photographs, videos, documents, images, personal correspondence, and records of their artistic practices.
I gathered this material circumstantially in a space in my office for several reasons: the main one was my curiosity about the limited information I had about their trajectory. This is how I began the journey that led to this research and the process of analyzing this archive, from which the body and the problems of its representation in relation to the city as a context, to the field of art and the image of the homosexual subject, formed a series of tensions that outlined a map of aspects of the regional art scene at the time they were produced. The initial question facing this archive was: What happened in the 1980s and 1990s in the city of Monterrey for the work of these three artists to be dismissed from the official memory of Monterrey art?
