The Twilight Zone— Bernardo Esquinca

During the 1940s, as Mexico City's nightlife grew with the emergence of clubs, bars, and brothels, society witnessed a series of homicides that triggered alarms of the most heinous violence. Through the testimonies of the criminals themselves, police officers, clandestine midwives, and journalists, this novel tells, through history and fiction, the case of Gregorio "el Goyo" Cárdenas: a femicide who went to prison and was released thirty years later by the Mexican authorities.

A journalist will try, from the present, to clarify the irregularities of the case. The risky course of her investigation, however, shows that the social circumstances of the 1940s—those that glorified the monstrosity of the murderers instead of focusing on the victims and erased female participation from history—are still relevant today.

La región crepuscular is a hell of machismo, sexism, and abuse of power that prevents addressing the true causes of violence. Composed of different voices, some from the present and others from the time of the events, Bernardo Esquinca's most recent work broadens the perspective from which we judge serial killers.
