Los Angeles, the cradle of American modernism, has been the epicenter of a new way of life for the past hundred years, as manifested in its avant-garde architecture and design. With its roots in the innovative houses of Frank Lloyd Wright, Greene & Greene, and Rudolph Schindler of the early twentieth century, this ever-evolving city became a melting pot of modern living. Drawing on the International Style, Los Angeles architects and designers developed their own individual styles with an uncommon sensibility to place, landscape, and human scale. This type of modernism, blurring the boundaries between indoors and out, has been imitated from Seattle to Sydney.
