Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis is a passionate and exciting account of a declining social class: the white working class in the United States. Hillbillies, a derogatory term referring to inhabitants of the Appalachian Mountains, are part of this increasingly impoverished and radicalized social group in the country.
J.D. Vance tells the story of people who have slowly deteriorated over more than forty years, and whose decline is perfectly exemplified by his dysfunctional family. Through his violent grandmother, his drug-addicted mother, or his absent father, Vance portrays the longings, struggles and conflicts, values, and relentless search for culprits to blame for their misfortune, of a community forgotten for years by the system and now, after Donald Trump's victory, a center of attention.
Resentment, lack of ambition, and a lethal combination of victimhood and pessimism, along with a devotion to the country, fervent faith in God, and an unrestrained sense of honor, have led hillbillies to a tendency towards physical and verbal violence, alcoholism, and drugs. They are content to live off government subsidies and are despised by their compatriots on both coasts of the country.
Their response to all of this is well-known: they have elevated Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States.
