As in global politics, the history of architecture has also tended to view refugees as mere human surplus. Therefore, standard architectural histories have generally limited themselves to reproducing the nation-state's exclusion of refugees as displaced persons. This book examines some of the often-ignored but undoubtedly decisive intersections between massive population displacement and architecture, tracing a journey through the 19th and 20th centuries to the present day. Pointing to the figure of the refugee as the central collective political theme of our time, this study attempts to initiate a history of refugee architecture that can be included in both architectural histories and those that account for refugee displacement.
