From Passive House to Standard. Passivhaus: Passive Architecture in Hot Climates— Micheel Wassouf

Although the concept of “passive house” dates back to the 1970s, it wasn't until the creation of Passivhaus (the German energy optimization standard for home construction) that this sustainable architecture practice came of age. Since the first Passivhaus building was constructed in Germany in the early 1990s, the Passivhaus protocol has been successfully applied in buildings all over the world, from the cold city of Oslo to tropical Shanghai.

This book explains the concept of passive architecture, describes the Passivhaus standard, and explores its application in warm climate territories. With a practical and direct approach, the author presents the basic concepts of this building standardization, the current technologies it uses, and the fundamental guidelines for its application in countries with temperate and warm climates. The book is structured in three chapters: passive architecture, the Passivhaus standard, and a third section where the PHPP tool is applied to reference buildings in cities with warm and tropical climates such as Madrid, Lisbon, Mexico City, or Rio de Janeiro. In addition, various examples of Passivhaus buildings are presented that demonstrate the viability of the standard in these areas.
